SAFA Approves Pitso Mosimane Appointment As Bafana Bafana Coach
Pitso Mosimane is set to make a return to the Bafana Bafana dugout after the South African Football Association’s National Executive Committee approved his appointment as the new head coach.
The decision was taken during SAFA’s Extraordinary NEC Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August, with Mosimane receiving the backing of the association’s executive members to succeed Hugo Broos.
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan confirmed that the appointment had been approved, although a few administrative matters still need to be finalised before the deal can be formally announced.
An official announcement is expected next week.
Mosimane Set For Bafana Return
Mosimane’s return would mark another chapter in his long association with South African football and the national team.
The 61-year-old previously coached Bafana Bafana as a caretaker in 2007 before taking permanent charge between 2010 and 2012.
His return comes at a particularly significant moment for the national team following a historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Bafana Make World Cup History
South Africa returned from the 2026 World Cup with their strongest performance at the global tournament to date.
Bafana qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history after securing a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico.
Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal as South Africa advanced to the second round, adding another significant milestone to a campaign that also saw the country qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 24 years.
Mosimane will therefore inherit a team coming off a historic campaign and carrying increased expectations ahead of the next phase of its development.
SAFA Finalises Plans For Elective Congress
The NEC meeting also covered preparations for SAFA’s Elective Congress, which is scheduled to take place on 12 September 2026.
Nominations for the various positions to be contested were handed over to the Governance Committee this week.
SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao delivered the nomination files to Governance Committee chairman Victor Mogajane and committee members Tumi Dlamini, Abel Ramolotja, Shakespeare Hadebe and Anzel Laubscher at SAFA House.
Mosimane Inherits A Team On The Rise
With SAFA’s approval now secured, attention will turn to the final details before Mosimane’s appointment is officially confirmed.
His return comes with Bafana Bafana entering a new era after their historic World Cup campaign and Broos’ departure.
For Mosimane, the challenge will be to build on that momentum and guide South Africa through the next stage of their development, with expectations likely to be high from the moment he returns to the national team dugout.
