Hundreds of supporters dressed in red gathered in KuGumpo, formerly known as East London, on Wednesday as they showed support for Julius Malema ahead of his sentencing.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader is facing sentencing after being found guilty of firing a rifle into the air during a party rally in 2018.
The case, brought forward by AfriForum, has drawn significant public attention over the years. Prosecutors are pushing for the maximum sentence of 15 years.
Supporters March To Court
Police maintained a strong presence in the area as EFF supporters marched to court ahead of the final proceedings.
The party has described the case as an attempt to silence Malema, who is widely known for his outspoken and confrontational political style.
Ongoing Controversy Around Political Rhetoric
Malema has faced ongoing criticism from AfriForum, particularly over his use of the struggle-era chant “Kill the Boer” at rallies.
The phrase has been a point of contention, with critics arguing it promotes violence, while South African courts have ruled that it should be understood within its historical context and does not constitute hate speech.
The issue also gained international attention when Donald Trump referenced the chant during talks with Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House last year, alongside disputed claims about violence against white farmers.
