The driver involved in the deadly scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark has withdrawn his bail application.
Ayanda Dludla, 22, appeared briefly in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court, where the State confirmed that he faces additional charges related to the incident.
Twelve children were killed when the vehicle attempted an illegal overtaking manoeuvre on Monday morning, and two more later died in hospital, bringing the total fatalities to fourteen.
Dludla now faces 14 counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of driving without a valid professional driving permit. During proceedings, he kept his head down, spoke softly, and offered no reaction as the State outlined the gravity of the charges.
The courtroom was filled to capacity, with grieving family members and community members occupying all available seating and some standing along the walls.
Magistrate Claudia Venter scheduled further investigations for 5 March 2026 and confirmed that Dludla will remain in custody until then.
Police continue their investigations, with detectives gathering evidence to determine the full circumstances of the crash.
