Bafana Bafana secured their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in history after a hard fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey.
Thapelo Maseko’s decisive second half strike sealed a memorable win for Hugo Broos’ side, completing a remarkable turnaround after their disappointing opening defeat to Mexico and ensuring South Africa finished second in Group A.
The result marks a significant milestone for South African football, with Bafana advancing beyond the group stage at a World Cup for the first time since making their tournament debut.
Slow Start As South Korea Apply Early Pressure
South Africa once again endured a nervy opening period as South Korea immediately asserted themselves.
Within two minutes, Aubrey Modiba was required to clear off the line to deny Kim Min-jae after a dangerous South Korean attack. The Asian side dominated possession during the early exchanges and looked the more threatening team as they searched for the breakthrough.
Bafana struggled to establish control but gradually grew into the contest. Their first meaningful opportunity arrived through Maseko, who was released by Relebohile Mofokeng, only to see his effort blocked and gathered by goalkeeper Lee Gi-hyuk.
As the first half progressed, South Africa began to find more space in attacking areas. Maseko was at the heart of the improvement, creating an opportunity for Mbatha, whose powerful effort was well saved, before testing the goalkeeper himself with an attempt that drifted narrowly over the crossbar.
Maseko Delivers The Decisive Moment
South Korea introduced star forward Son Heung-min at the start of the second half in an attempt to spark their attack, but it was South Africa who emerged with renewed confidence after the interval.
Broos’ side looked increasingly dangerous and eventually found the breakthrough in the 63rd minute.
Substitute Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact after entering the field, providing a clever pass to Maseko on the edge of the area. The winger kept his composure and fired a low effort beyond Kim Seung-gyu to send the South African supporters into celebration.
The goal arrived at the perfect time for Bafana, while news filtered through that Mexico were comfortably leading Czechia in the other Group A fixture, opening the door to automatic qualification.
Defensive Resolve Sees Bafana Through
With a place in the knockout rounds within touching distance, South Africa produced a disciplined defensive display during the closing stages.
South Korea enjoyed large spells of possession as they pushed for an equaliser, but Bafana remained organised and composed. The backline stood firm under pressure, limiting clear opportunities and protecting their slender advantage.
As the final whistle sounded, scenes of jubilation erupted on the South African bench. Broos collapsed to the turf in celebration before players and staff flooded the pitch to mark a historic achievement.
Canada Await In The Round Of 32
South Africa’s victory, coupled with Mexico’s 3-0 win over Czechia, ensured Bafana finished second in Group A and advanced directly to the Round of 32.
Having entered the tournament under pressure following their opening loss, Broos’ men responded with a draw against Czechia before delivering the result they needed against South Korea.
Their reward is a knockout clash against Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, 28 June, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 South African time.
With history already made, Bafana Bafana will now look to continue their remarkable World Cup journey and move one step closer to an even greater achievement.
