The Madlanga Commission has formally requested a sworn affidavit from suspended Mpumalanga police commissioner Daphney Semakaleng Manamela, asking her to provide evidence to support serious corruption allegations she has made publicly.
Manamela’s claims, made in April 2026, include accusations that suspended national police commissioner Fannie Masemola ignored warnings about corruption within the province.
She has also alleged that her suspension was linked to her efforts to expose collusion between police officials and criminal networks, rather than any misconduct on her part. Her claims further include allegations of political interference in investigations involving illegal mining, kidnappings and politically motivated killings, as well as the existence of a R5 million bribe.
According to Manamela, a specialised provincial task team probing serious crimes was disbanded following her suspension, potentially compromising ongoing investigations.
Masemola has denied the allegations and has challenged Manamela to present evidence to the commission.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the inquiry is treating the matter with urgency, noting that such claims fall within its mandate to investigate corruption, criminality and political interference within the justice system.
The commission has also notified legal representatives of the Gardee family after Manamela alleged interference in the investigation into the murder of Hillary Gardee.
Officials say no further details will be released at this stage as the commission awaits Manamela’s formal submission.
