South Africans can expect a cold and unsettled long weekend, with the South African Weather Service issuing multiple warnings for severe weather across the country.
An Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued for parts of the Northern Cape, North West and Free State, with heavy rainfall expected to continue into Friday.
Forecasters say a strong upper-air system will bring widespread rainfall of between 40mm and 90mm, raising the risk of localised flooding and disruptions, particularly in the western regions of the Free State and North West.
The weather service has cautioned that the conditions could result in damage to infrastructure, property, vehicles and livestock.
Additional warnings include a Yellow Level 4 alert for severe thunderstorms in other parts of the country, as well as a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, a cold front is expected to move along the south-west coast of the Western Cape from Friday into Saturday, bringing strong winds and rough sea conditions.
Residents have been advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the severe weather system moves across the country.
