COTONOU — Romuald Wadagni has secured a landslide victory in Benin’s presidential election, according to provisional results released by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA). Wadagni, who has served as the nation’s Finance Minister since 2016, claimed 94.05 percent of the total vote, comfortably defeating his opponent Paul Hounkpe, who garnered 5.95 percent.

The president-elect addressed the nation on Tuesday, describing the outcome as a victory for national unity. Wadagni expressed humility regarding the results and praised the professionalism of the electoral institutions. He further acknowledged the democratic maturity of Hounkpe, who conceded and offered congratulations before the official announcement was finalized.

The election saw a significant turnout rate of 58.75 percent, reflecting strong mobilization from voters both within the country and in the diaspora. Wadagni interpreted the overwhelming support as a mandate to foster national consensus during a period of international uncertainty. He has pledged to incorporate this sense of unity into his future governance and executive duties.

This transition marks a commitment to the political and economic trajectory established by outgoing President Patrice Talon. Wadagni confirmed his intention to maintain continuity, stating that he plans to build upon the solid foundations laid by his predecessor. His stated objective is to transform Benin into a modern state that ensures the well-being of all its citizens.

The victory comes at a critical time for Benin as it seeks to maintain stability in a volatile regional environment. Analysts suggest that the Finance Minister’s transition to the presidency will likely reassure international markets and provide a predictable policy environment for investors. The high margin of victory, however, will place significant pressure on the incoming administration to deliver on its promises of modernization and inclusive growth.
