Standard Bank Hit By Data Breach Investigation
South Africa’s data watchdog, the Information Regulator, is investigating a data breach at Standard Bank after unauthorised access to client information was detected.
The bank confirmed that an external party accessed parts of its systems containing personal data, including names and identity numbers. However, it stressed that its core banking systems were not compromised and that customer accounts remain secure.
Scope Of Breach Still Unclear
Advocate Tshepo Boikanyo said the regulator is assessing the extent of the breach and has requested further details from the bank.
The investigation will examine the bank’s security measures, including authentication systems, encryption, network protection and monitoring processes.
At this stage, Standard Bank has not determined how many customers may have been affected or how widespread the breach is.
Clients Urged To Stay Alert
While accounts remain secure, the bank has warned customers to be cautious of phishing scams and impersonation attempts that may arise following the breach.
Rising Cybersecurity Concerns
The incident comes amid growing concerns about cyber threats in the financial sector. Earlier this year, the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa was targeted in a ransomware attack, highlighting vulnerabilities in digital banking systems.
Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of strong cybersecurity measures as attacks become more sophisticated.
