Harry Kane Crowned 2026 Ballon d’Or Winner After Record-Breaking Season
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first English footballer in a quarter of a century to claim the prestigious individual award after a remarkable season for club and country.
Harry Kane has reached another major milestone in his career after being named the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or at a ceremony in London, ending England’s 25-year wait for football’s most coveted individual honour.
The England captain’s outstanding return of 73 goals across club and international football during the 2025/26 season proved decisive, earning him recognition ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who finished second and third respectively.
Kane becomes only the fifth Englishman to win the award, following in the footsteps of Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen. Owen was the last English player to receive the honour in 2001, making Kane’s achievement a significant moment for English football.
A remarkable journey to the top
For Kane, the award represents the culmination of a career built on persistence, consistency and determination. His rise to the top of world football was far from straightforward, with several loan spells earlier in his career before he established himself as one of the game’s most prolific forwards.
Speaking after receiving the award from Brazilian football legend Ronaldo, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, Kane described the moment as beyond anything he had imagined.
The striker also highlighted the significance of winning the award in London and expressed hope that his journey would inspire young players to pursue their ambitions, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.
Kane acknowledged the contributions of his teammates and coaches at Bayern Munich and with the England national team, stressing that individual success would not have been possible without the collective effort of those around him.
His move from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich in 2023 has played an important role in his career, placing him in a new competitive environment and providing further opportunities to compete for major honours.
England celebrates a historic achievement
Kane’s victory drew congratulations from across the football world, including England head coach Thomas Tuchel and Prince William, the Football Association’s patron.
Tuchel praised the striker’s performances and described the recognition as thoroughly deserved, highlighting his importance as England’s captain and leader.
Prince William also celebrated the achievement, commending Kane’s influence on the game and the memorable moments he has delivered to supporters around the world.
In tribute to the historic occasion, Wembley Stadium’s iconic arch in London and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena were illuminated in Kane’s honour.
Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also welcomed the result, expressing his delight at seeing an English player receive the award again after such a lengthy wait. Carragher pointed to Kane’s exceptional career and identified Jude Bellingham as another English player with the potential to challenge for the honour in the future.
Ballon d’Or ceremony overshadowed by confusion
Despite the celebrations, the build-up to the ceremony was marked by confusion after the official Ballon d’Or website briefly published separate articles appearing to name Kane, Mbappe and Yamal as the winner of the men’s award.
The articles were subsequently removed before Kane was officially confirmed as the recipient. The incident generated speculation ahead of the announcement, although the final result placed the Bayern Munich striker at the top of the rankings.
The ceremony also experienced a 45-minute delay because of traffic in London, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 20:45 SAST.
Other major winners at the 2026 Ballon d’Or
While Kane claimed the headline award, several other players, coaches and clubs were recognised for their achievements.
Alexia Putellas won the Women’s Ballon d’Or, while Yamal secured the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award. Vicky Lopez received the corresponding women’s honour.
Kane also won the Men’s Striker of the Year award, further underlining his remarkable goalscoring campaign. Charlyn Corral claimed the women’s striking award, while Unai Simón and Cata Coll were named the respective goalkeepers of the year.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and Barcelona manager Pere Romeu received the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year awards. Paris Saint-Germain was named Men’s Club of the Year, with Barcelona taking the women’s award.
Arsenal and England winger Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award for his humanitarian work, recognising his contribution beyond the football pitch.
A new chapter for English football
Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph represents a landmark achievement for both the striker and English football. After years of consistent goalscoring and a career shaped by perseverance, he has joined an exclusive group of English players to receive the sport’s most prestigious individual recognition.
With the award now added to his growing list of achievements, Kane’s journey stands as an example of how sustained excellence and determination can lead to the highest levels of success in world football.
