On Wednesday morning, a horrific car crash left shattered glass and scattered car parts along the road in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg.
This devastating collision involved Premier Soccer League (PSL) player Shaune Mogaila’s black BMW and a red Hyundai i10, tragically resulting in the death of a nine-year-old child.
A dashcam video of the crash has gone viral on social media, stirring public outrage. Witnesses reported that Mogaila’s BMW was speeding in the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the Hyundai.
The Hyundai was driven by a woman taking two children, aged nine and 13, to school. The nine-year-old was declared dead at the scene, while the driver and the older child were transported to Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital for medical attention.
After initially fleeing the scene, the Sekhukhune United player handed himself in to the police later that day. His actions have drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his decision to come forward, while others criticised him.
Hours before the accident, Mogaila was playing in a football match against Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
Gauteng Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that Mogaila now faces charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
According to state prosecutor Maxwell Randima, his first court appearance was scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed due to an incomplete case docket.
Mogaila is now set to appear in court on Friday.
