SASSA Payment Delays Hit Certain Beneficiaries

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced a delay in the May 2025 social grant payments for a specific group of beneficiaries.

This comes as the agency embarks on a nationwide identity verification and eligibility review initiative aimed at ensuring the integrity of the social grant system.

According to SASSA, the review process is designed to allow beneficiaries to update their personal information and confirm any changes in their financial status.

The move forms part of efforts to eliminate inclusion errors within the current grant system and ensure that only eligible individuals continue to receive assistance.

The beneficiaries affected by the delay are primarily those who use alternative identification methods rather than the standard 13-digit South African ID number.

In collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, SASSA identified that many of these individuals actually have valid 13-digit ID numbers registered in the Home Affairs database, although these IDs are not reflected in SASSA’s grant records.

To resolve this discrepancy, affected beneficiaries are required to visit their nearest SASSA office for a review. During this process, their 13-digit ID numbers will be captured and verified to complete the update.

Failure to participate in the review could lead to grant suspension, and prolonged non-compliance may result in complete termination of the grant.

In addition to ID verification, the agency is also reviewing the eligibility of recipients flagged during the bulk means test. This step aims to identify individuals who may be receiving income through undisclosed bank accounts, which could affect their eligibility for continued grant support.

SASSA reminded beneficiaries that, under Regulation 30 of the Social Assistance Act, grants can be reviewed at any time if there is reason to believe a recipient’s financial situation has changed.

While a person may have qualified for a grant at the time of application, improved circumstances over time could make them ineligible.

Looking ahead, SASSA plans to intensify its eligibility verification efforts in the 2025/2026 financial year to strengthen oversight and ensure that the social security system remains fair and sustainable.
