Godongwana’s Revised Budget Receives Positive Response from DA
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana presented his third national budget for the 2025 financial year on Wednesday, navigating an unusual political environment under the Government of National Unity.
Despite earlier tensions, the revised budget appears to have secured tentative support from the Democratic Alliance, the second-largest party in the unity government.
The updated budget was delivered in Parliament with a focus on advancing key national objectives including economic redress, redistribution, and structural transformation.
These changes come after weeks of political discussions and adjustments following resistance to earlier proposals.
The Democratic Alliance, which recently challenged the minister in court over a proposed value-added tax increase, now suggests it may support the budget when it is brought to a vote in the National Assembly. This development signals a potential shift toward broader cooperation within the unity government.
Although Godongwana acknowledged that the current budget is still evolving, he emphasised that fiscal sustainability remains a shared objective among political partners.
He described the recent political negotiations as both challenging and necessary, reflecting the realities of governing in a diverse and democratic society.
According to the minister, this process has deepened understanding among political parties regarding each other’s policy priorities and the compromises required to move forward.
Following public and political opposition, the proposed VAT increase has been removed. In its place, the budget introduces an increase in the fuel levy after a three-year pause.
While this decision is expected to spark debate, it may be viewed by some stakeholders as a more acceptable alternative to raising general consumer taxes.
This latest iteration of the budget highlights the evolving nature of governance under the new political arrangement and may signal a more collaborative approach to economic reform in the months ahead.
