In a statement released on Friday, Cabinet emphasized that this measure is crucial to ensure uninterrupted access to grant payments.

Beneficiaries are advised to visit their nearest Postbank service points located within popular retailers such as Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave, and Boxer to obtain their new Postbank Black Cards.

After the extended deadline of 20 March 2025 (initially set for 28 February), SASSA Gold Cards will no longer be operational at ATMs and retailers.

This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by grant recipients regarding potential payment disruptions due to the impending expiry of the SASSA Gold Cards. Postbank, responsible for administering the social grant payment system, has assured that the transition to the new Black Card is straightforward and completely free.

The shift is part of Postbank’s ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the security of the social grant payment system following previous challenges involving fraud, card cloning, and system failures. By adopting the new Postbank Black Cards, beneficiaries will experience improved security and reliability when accessing their grants.

Additional support has been deployed at designated retailers and SASSA offices to facilitate the card replacement process, and beneficiaries are encouraged to complete the switch before the deadline to avoid inconveniences.

Postbank has made it easy for beneficiaries to find their nearest card replacement points by using their cellphones to dial 120218*3#, replying with number 1, and then selecting the number representing their province.

To receive the new Postbank Black Cards, beneficiaries must present a valid South African ID or temporary ID. Cards will not be issued without these essential documents.

This streamlined documentation requirement reflects the ongoing commitment by SASSA and Postbank to enhance the overall customer experience for all social grant recipients.
