Residents in Durban and surrounding areas are advised to prepare for a potential 24-hour water outage, as uMngeni-uThukela Water is expected to temporarily suspend operations at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works from 4:00 AM on Tuesday, 7 April 2025.

The planned shutdown is necessary to replace a 1200mm gravity sales meter and to inspect pipeline meters for billing accuracy. Although the water supply interruption is scheduled to last only one day, the system may take up to two weeks to fully recover, particularly in high-lying areas where reservoirs require more time to refill.

In preparation for the shutdown, affected reservoirs will be filled to capacity. However, residents are encouraged to use water sparingly to support quicker system recovery once operations resume.

Key Facilities:

The shutdown may also affect healthcare centres such as Kingsway Hospital, two cancer centres, Ekuhlengeni Psychiatric Hospital, and major commercial zones including Southgate Industrial Park and Prospecton Industrial.

Authorities recommend that all households and businesses in affected areas store sufficient water ahead of the planned shutdown and limit non-essential usage during and after the outage to help stabilise the supply system.
