The Pretoria Magistrates Court has granted an application by corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi Matlala to remain at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre ahead of his trial.
Matlala, who is facing multiple charges linked to an allegedly irregular R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender awarded in 2024, appeared in court again on Monday.
Earlier this year, he had been transferred to the Ebongweni super-maximum facility but was returned to Pretoria for court proceedings.
His legal team argued that his continued detention at Kgosi Mampuru would allow for easier consultation in preparation for trial, a submission the court accepted.
The State alleges that Matlala and his co-accused used front companies and falsified documents to secure the lucrative police contract.
While the defence is expected to challenge aspects of the State’s evidence and has requested additional time to prepare, prosecutors are pushing for a trial date, emphasising the need to avoid further delays.
The case is expected to involve extensive financial records and multiple witnesses, which could influence the timeline of proceedings.
Matlala’s legal team is also anticipated to file a further application concerning his detention conditions as the matter moves closer to trial.
