Six learners from Milnerton High School, facing eight counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, have been released on bail of R2,000 each by the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. Two additional underage learners facing the same charges were released from police custody with a formal warning.
The accused, all in Grade 11, are alleged to have assaulted a Grade 10 learner last Friday. A video capturing the incident has circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention.
The learners appeared in court on Thursday after voluntarily surrendering at the Milnerton Police Station. The magistrate granted bail to the six learners on the condition that they stay away from the complainants and witnesses involved in the matter. In total, eight learners from the school have filed criminal complaints against the accused.
The National Prosecuting Authority outlined some of the bail conditions, including a strict prohibition on any direct or indirect contact with the complainants and witnesses. The learners must also avoid approaching them and walk away if they encounter them.
Additionally, the accused are barred from entering the school premises while the case is ongoing. The Western Cape Education Department has arranged an alternative venue to ensure the learners can continue their school exams without disruption.
