A patient has attacked and killed a fellow patient at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
It’s alleged that the victim was assaulted with a drip stand in a ward.
The incident has been reported to police for further investigation.
The hospital’s CEO Dr Sifiso Maseko says the incident demonstrates that while they have improved security at the hospital, it’s clearly not sufficient.
He says they have met with the family of the victim to offer their condolences and support.
He says: “One of the questions is are you safe when you go to a facility like Baragwanath hospital? I can assure the community that they are. We are very much saddened, it’s the first incident of its kind. We had put everything in place because we take patient safety as our top priority.”
