Du Toit secures early Japan exit to keep his family together

CAPE TOWN — Springbok forward Pieter-Steph du Toit has secured an early release from Toyota Verblitz to avoid spending another season separated from his family and travelling between Japan and South Africa. The Japanese club confirmed the mutually agreed departure on 6 November, ending his five-season stay while his next team remains unannounced.

Du Toit was still under contract, but Verblitz said discussions about his future had resulted in an agreement respecting his wishes. The loose forward thanked management for accommodating his family during their time in Japan and understanding why he wanted to return home. “They were understanding of my situation and kindly agreed to an early release from my contract,” he said in the club’s statement.

At 34, Du Toit brings substantial experience to any prospective signing. He was part of South Africa’s World Cup-winning teams in 2019 and 2023 and received World Rugby’s men’s Player of the Year award in 2019 and 2024. His departure takes effect immediately, making his availability different from players completing another Japanese season before returning.

His move comes alongside other Springboks heading back to domestic rugby. Malcolm Marx and Manie Libbok are set to join the Bulls and Sharks respectively after their Japanese commitments, while Du Toit’s destination has yet to be confirmed. An announcement about his next club was expected after the Nations Championship.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has welcomed the returning players, saying their presence would strengthen South African teams and provide younger players with experienced mentors. For Du Toit, the next development is a club announcement that establishes where he will resume domestic rugby after bringing his Japanese chapter to a close.
