Mofokeng’s Belgian breakthrough draws interest from two leagues

SHARE

BRUSSELS — Relebohile Mofokeng’s productive start at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise has reportedly attracted attention from Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and Lille in France, giving the former Orlando Pirates attacker an early opportunity to impress clubs beyond Belgium. The reported interest follows five goals and four assists in his first 15 appearances for Union.

The 22-year-old Bafana Bafana international has also earned a nomination for October’s Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month award. He was shortlisted alongside Club Brugge forwards Nicolo Tresoldi and Carlos Forbs, with a goal and an assist in three league appearances during the month.

His performances have prompted suggestions that he is already outgrowing Belgian football. The more concrete development, however, is the reported scouting interest. Sacha Tavolieri’s reporting for Sky Sports, said Lille were monitoring Mofokeng and Leverkusen were following his progress. That reporting does not establish that either club has submitted an offer or reached an agreement with Union.

Mofokeng’s contribution has extended beyond domestic competition. Union’s Europa League campaign included a 3–0 victory over Viktoria Plzeň, a draw with Real Sociedad and a 4–0 win against Hapoel Beer Sheva, providing a European stage alongside his league appearances. Those results are recorded in the Belgian club’s own match reports.

For South African supporters, his progress offers an encouraging measure of how quickly he has adapted since leaving Pirates. Goals, assists and individual recognition provide evidence of that adjustment, although they do not establish that another transfer is imminent.

Union also retain a strong contractual position. EWN reports that Mofokeng’s deal runs until 2030, meaning any interested club would need to negotiate his release. His immediate platform remains the Belgian side, where sustained performances can strengthen both his place in the team and the case for a future move.
