Liverpool lose twice-held lead as Como match European record
ISTANBUL — Liverpool’s perfect Champions League start ended in a 3-2 defeat at Fenerbahce after they twice surrendered the lead, while Como produced the night’s most emphatic result by beating Lens 9-1. The Italian side’s eight-goal winning margin equalled the record for the competition’s Champions League era.
Trey Nyoni put Liverpool ahead in the 25th minute on Wednesday, but Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later. Substitute Alexander Isak restored the visitors’ advantage in the 69th minute, only for Fenerbahce to overturn the deficit with two goals in six minutes.
Archie Brown levelled in the 73rd minute before Vedat Muriqi struck the winner in the 79th. Liverpool’s inability to protect either advantage proved decisive, leaving them with nine points from four league-phase matches after victories over Atlético Madrid, LASK and Villarreal.
For Fenerbahce, the result delivered a first victory of the league phase and lifted their total to five points. It also marked a significant recovery from their 6-0 defeat at Aston Villa in October, with draws against Roma and Slavia Prague accounting for their other points.
In France, Cesc Fàbregas’s Como scored six times after the interval to overwhelm Lens. Anastasios Douvikas contributed a hat-trick and an assist as the Italians followed their 4-1 victory over Manchester United with another commanding attacking performance.
Elsewhere, Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 through Erling Haaland’s 78th-minute winner, while Arsenal defeated Slavia Prague 2-1. Federico Valverde scored in stoppage time as Real Madrid overcame AEK Athens 3-2 to preserve their unbeaten, four-win start.
Liverpool’s next European assignment is away to Club Brugge on 25 November. Fenerbahce travel to face Shakhtar Donetsk on the same date, seeking to build on the victory that revived their campaign.
