The African National Congress has announced a change in its Western Cape leadership following the departure of Ebrahim Rasool as the party’s provincial convener.

The announcement was made by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula during a briefing after the party’s National Working Committee meeting. Mbalula confirmed that Jerimia Thuynsma, a pastor, activist and former City of Cape Town councillor from Mitchells Plain, will take over the position.

Rasool’s departure comes shortly after Mbalula revealed plans to reorganise the ANC’s Western Cape Provincial Task Team. His exit led to speculation within party ranks, but Mbalula clarified that Rasool remains a dedicated member of the ANC. He stepped down due to professional commitments that prevented him from giving the role the attention it requires.

New Leadership to Revive the Party

Thuynsma, who accepted the appointment earlier this week, is expected to bring fresh energy to the ANC’s work in the Western Cape, a province that has long been under the control of the Democratic Alliance.

With experience in civic activism, labour movements and local government, Thuynsma has previously worked with the South African Communist Party, COSATU and the ANC Youth Movement.

Mbalula expressed confidence that the new convener’s experience and enthusiasm would strengthen the party’s presence in the province and help drive its renewal efforts.

Building Strength Ahead of 2026

Thuynsma’s appointment forms part of the ANC’s wider plan to strengthen its structures and rebuild support in the Western Cape ahead of the 2026 municipal elections. He is expected to be sworn in before the end of the week to officially begin his duties as provincial convener.

Ebrahim Rasool has had a long career in public service. He served as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2015 and again in 2025, as a Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2010, and as Premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008.

Earlier this year, Rasool was declared persona non grata by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and expelled from the country following his criticism of the Donald Trump administration.
