Pretoria – Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba on Monday visited Rosettenville following acts of violence that erupted in the area over the weekend.
The purpose of the visit was to engage locals and immigrants to ensure peace and stability. This follows violent protests over drugs and prostitution in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, at the weekend.
More than 10 houses of suspected drug lords and brothel owners were set alight.
During his visit, Minister Gigaba said the department and locals needed to agree on what to do.
He appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands.
Angry residents had taken to the streets forcing their way into homes believed to be used for drug dealing and prostitution. The residents have accused police officers of visiting the brothel and not taking their cases seriously.
At least 10 houses suspected to belong to drug lords and brothel owners were set alight during a protest on Saturday night.
Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at a group of people, saying they were conducting an illegal gathering in the area.
During his visit in the area, Minister Gigaba was accompanied by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane and Provincial Police Commissioner Deliwe De Lange.
