Following a 2-1 victory over Augsburg to close up the regular season, Bayer Leverkusen became the first side in Bundesliga to go the whole season undefeated.

Leverkusen becomes the first team since Borussia Dortmund in 2011/12 to overtake Bayern for the Bundesliga title. After a 43-game unbeaten streak, they won the title with a game to spare. They now strive for a DFB Cup and UEFA Europa League for a treble.

Xabi Alonso has performed wonders since joining Leverkusen in October 2022, helping the club to sixth place after a disappointing start to the season. Although many expected Leverkusen to have a better Bundesliga campaign, few expected them to finish the entire season undefeated.

Leverkusen has experienced just that; they have won the Bundesliga title effortlessly and without losing a single game. As a matter of fact, Alonso’s team earned the second-highest number of points (90) in the history of the German top division; Bayern Munich (91) leads the record.

The Leverkusen players and staff strolled around the BayArena following the victory over Augsburg to express their gratitude to the supporters for their support throughout the season. After that, they accepted their medals as the Bundesliga winners and raised the trophy.

Leverkusen now has the opportunity to spend the entire season unbeaten in all competitions, as they prepare for the Europa League final against Atalanta on Wednesday and the DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern next Saturday. Alonso’s team has now not lost in 51 games this season.

Despite losing 1-0 to Juventus in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, Atalanta has had a strong finish to the season, winning six and drawing one of their last eight games in all competitions. They also defeated Sporting CP, Liverpool, and Marseille on route to the Europa League final.
