South Africa is mourning the sudden loss of acclaimed actor Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away at the age of 40. His death was confirmed on Tuesday morning, although the exact cause has not yet been disclosed. According to reports, his family shared that he had succumbed to a brief illness.
Chweneyagae first captured national and international attention through his powerful performance in Tsotsi, the 2005 Academy Award-winning film for Best Foreign Language Film. Portraying a young gangster seeking redemption, his portrayal won him the Golden Horn Award in 2006 and solidified his place as a force in the South African film industry. He starred alongside prominent actors including Terry Pheto, Mothusi Magano, Kenneth Nkosi, and Owen Sejake.
Beyond Tsotsi, Chweneyagae continued to impress with standout roles in productions such as iNumber Number Jozi Gold, Zama Zama, and most recently, the hit television series The River, where he played Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena. In early 2025, he further cemented his influence with his role in the 13-part drama series Cobrizi.
Born in Mafikeng, North West, Chweneyagae overcame a challenging upbringing in Soweto. He often drew from his personal experiences to bring depth and realism to his roles, making him an inspiration for aspiring actors. His authenticity, combined with his ability to balance emotional depth with intensity, earned him critical acclaim. In 2020, he was honoured with the Royalty Soapie Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.
Despite his celebrated career, Chweneyagae’s life was not without controversy. In 2023, he faced public criticism for allegedly defaulting on child maintenance payments. In 2024, questions arose around his foundation’s involvement in a National Lotteries Commission funding scandal. Still, those close to him often spoke of his generosity, his passion for storytelling, and his dedication to nurturing young talent through community arts initiatives.
News of his passing has been widely reported, with outlets such as North West Times, Newzroom Afrika, and commercial broadcaster MultiChoice acknowledging the profound loss. Nina Morris Lee, CEO of MLA, confirmed his death in a statement:
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely death of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40.”
Chweneyagae leaves behind a remarkable legacy—one defined by raw talent, resilience, and a significant impact on South African cinema and television. His death leaves a void in the hearts of his fans, peers, and the broader creative community.
