Gouws loses ward bid, early results leave KYP’s mayoral hopes dim

SHARE

JOHANNESBURG — Renaldo Gouws has lost his bid to win Nelson Mandela Bay’s Ward 5, while provisional results in Johannesburg show little electoral support for Know Your Power, leaving its candidate Galston Anthony’s ambition to become mayor looking remote. Gouws received 179 votes in his ward contest; KYP’s Johannesburg tally remained in the low hundreds as counting continued.

Standing for the Freedom Front Plus, Gouws secured 2.98% of the 6,003 valid ward votes, according to IEC figures displayed by ESP. The DA won with 3,382 votes, or 56.34%, with all four voting districts reporting. Gouws finished joint sixth alongside the ATM candidate, behind the DA, EFF, ANC, ActionSA and UDM.

The winning DA candidate was former radio presenter Daron Mann, listed on the candidate register as Daron Momberg. Gouws, a former DA councillor and MP, had sought a return through the newly redrawn ward, which incorporates much of his former Ward 2. His defeat settles the ward contest but does not establish whether he could secure a council seat through the FF Plus’s proportional representation list.

In Johannesburg, Galston Anthony Langa campaigned under KYP with proposals to encourage private-sector employment and improve municipal delivery. His campaign website describes an approach centred on budgets, and campaign videos performance targets and timelines, presenting his mayoral bid as a programme for running the city more effectively.

The available results, however, showed a small support base. At the dashboard’s 16:29 update on 6 November, KYP had received 278 ward votes across Johannesburg, with 523 of 862 voting districts reporting. A separate PR snapshot, updated at 16:04 with 505 districts reporting, recorded 196 votes for the party. These are incomplete party totals across the city, rather than Anthony’s personal result in a single ward.

Those numbers leave his mayoral ambitions looking remote, although voters do not directly elect Johannesburg’s mayor. Councillors elect the mayor from among their members, meaning Anthony would first need a council seat and then sufficient support within the council. KYP’s final seat allocation has not been established in the results reviewed, and the provisional figures alone cannot settle who will ultimately lead the city.
