Newly appointed National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi says prosecutors have provided sufficient information to suggest the State’s case in the murder trial of slain soccer star Senzo Meyiwa could succeed.

Speaking during a media briefing in Pretoria, Mothibi indicated that he had received a detailed briefing from the prosecution team handling the case and that the information presented points to prospects of success.

The high profile trial has gripped the country for more than a decade following Meyiwa’s fatal shooting in 2014. The former South Africa national soccer team captain was killed in what was initially described as a botched robbery.

The briefing marked Mothibi’s first formal engagement with the media since taking office as head of the National Prosecuting Authority, succeeding Shamila Batohi.

While responding to questions about the closely watched case, Mothibi maintained a cautious tone and avoided discussing specific evidence. However, he signalled confidence in the work of the prosecutors leading the matter.

The case has attracted intense public attention over the years, partly due to repeated delays and lingering questions surrounding the circumstances of Meyiwa’s death.

During the briefing, Mothibi also outlined his broader priorities for the NPA, emphasising the need to rebuild public trust in the institution and strengthen its capacity to prosecute complex and high profile crimes.

He also highlighted the importance of addressing case backlogs within the justice system, noting that prolonged trials often create a perception that matters are unnecessarily dragging.

The Meyiwa murder trial, currently being heard at the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Pretoria, remains one of the most closely followed criminal proceedings in South Africa as the public continues to demand answers about the circumstances surrounding the football star’s death.
