Emergency services are continuing a rescue operation in Roodepoort to retrieve suspected illegal miners trapped underground at an abandoned mine shaft.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) reported receiving information on Saturday about two individuals inside the Rand Leases gold mine. However, EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi indicated that the number of miners underground could be higher.
“There is also some information surfacing that it might be more than two, which we cannot really confirm at this stage,” Mulaudzi stated.
The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) is actively involved in the ongoing rescue efforts.
“This area, the jurisdiction of this area where we’re operating, is under the jurisdiction of DMR. Mine rescue teams are also on site, facilitating the lead service in terms of this rescue operation,” Mulaudzi explained.
This rescue mission follows a similar operation last month in Stilfontein, North West, where authorities recovered the bodies of 78 illegal miners from a disused mine.
