KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has told Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating police misconduct that he can confirm Minister Senzo Mchunu had an unethical relationship with North West businessman Brown Mogotsi.
Mkhwanazi appeared before the committee on 8 October 2025, where he said he has evidence showing that Mogotsi arranged meetings between Mchunu and murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala during the African National Congress (ANC) January 8 celebrations in Cape Town.
He was responding to questions about the minister’s alleged connections to figures linked to the criminal underworld.
Mkhwanazi told members of Parliament that his team had uncovered messages suggesting that Mogotsi was involved in the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team.
When asked by MK Party representative Sibonelo Nomvalo whether he believed the relationship between Mchunu, Mogotsi and Matlala was unethical, Mkhwanazi said he had every reason to think so.
He added that the minister had initially denied knowing Mogotsi but later referred to him as a comrade, which he described as unethical behaviour.
Mkhwanazi further alleged that Mogotsi had made arrangements for Matlala to host and look after Mchunu’s guests in Cape Town.
The hearings form part of Parliament’s ongoing inquiry into alleged corruption and misconduct within the South African Police Service.
