Houses for villagers

FOR many years, three families lived in crumbling mud houses. But Umlalazi Municipality in northern KZN helped them move into four-roomed, fully furnished houses.

The municipality asked local businesses to help build families homes.

And the families moved in last week. Thokozani Sibisi (35), from Nkuzi Empunga Village, said he lived in a rondavel that he inherited from his late parents for nearly 20 years.

“My parents died while I was still a teenager, The rondavel was the only thing they left me. I had to quit school after they died. I haven’t been able to get a permanent job because I don’t have any qualifications.”

“All the part-time jobs I get in the village come and go, as a result I haven’t been able to build a decent house,” said Thokozani, I am happy that the municipality had helped them to own houses.

“My walls had huge cracks and the thatched roof was leaking. I had to cover it with plastic to stop the rain from leaking into the house,” said Thokozani.

Mayor Thelumoya Zulu told the People’s Paper that the families were identified early this year.

Zulu said they asked local businesses for help.

“The houses were built by a mining company in the area.

“The municipality and ward Councillors facilitate the process to ensure these families are provided with decent houses.

“They were living in terrifying conditions.”
