President Jacob Zuma has reassured South Africans and the business community that the upcoming African National Congress (ANC) elective conference will be orderly and the transition will be smooth.

The ruling ANC is holding its 54th national conference from 16-20 December at Nasrec, which will see the party electing a new leadership and adopting various policies.

“We know that there is a lot of anxiety in the business community at this time, about what will transpire at the conference and the impact on the country’s future and even that of the region, SADC,” President Zuma said on Thursday.

He was speaking at the opening of a two-day Energy Indaba at Gallagher Estate Convention Centre, in Midrand.

He said the ANC’s national executive committee had convened its last ordinary meeting last weekend which he said was “one of the warmest, most productive and most comradely” meetings the party has ever held.

The National Executive Committee (NEC), the President added, is united in the resolve to ensure a successful, peaceful and orderly conference.

“In my capacity as President of the ANC, let me assure you that everything possible is being done to ensure a successful conference and transition to the future.”

President Zuma met with the seven ANC presidential hopefuls recently. In the meeting, according to President Zuma, they agreed on the need to ensure unity, order and cohesion at the conference.

The presidential hopefuls also met with ANC provincial secretaries and chairpersons and the same message was emphasised.

“A united and strong ANC is good for business and is good for the country.”

The President assured South Africans and the business community that as he prepares to step down as ANC President at the conference, he will work with all to ensure a successful and seamless handover to the new leadership.

“We need to unite as a nation and ensure that we face the challenges together and find solutions together, as we build a prosperous South Africa.”
