The richest game in sport came to Wembley Saturday as Luton Town and Coventry City faced off with promotion to the Premier League on the line. Ninety minutes wasn’t enough to decide the battle for Premier League promotion, nor was a half hour of extra time, so now we’re off to penalties.

Horvath and the Hatters made it all the way to the English Football League’s championship. In the game, Luton Town earned a 6-5 win on penalties over Coventry City to get called up to the Premier League.

Neither of these two teams have been in the top flight since 2001, the last time Coventry appeared in the top division, and for Luton Town the top-flight gap has been longer, stretching back to the 1991-92 season but one drought will end with a promotion that could be worth at least £170 million according to Deloitte.

The duo have followed quite the path to Wembley defeating Sunderland and Middlesbrough and will look to join Burnley and Sheffield United in the to flight.

Luton Town impressively became the first club in soccer history to go from non-league status to the Premier League.

The first 11 penalties of a high-quality shootout were scored before Dabo had the unenviable role of villain as he failed from 12 yards.

Jordan Clark put Luton 1-0 up in the first half before Gustavo Hamer equalised for Coventry after the break and the game headed to a shootout. Luton held their nerve to complete a journey from non-league to the Premier League in just nine years.

Coventry are in a significantly superior state to where they were when the 2022-23 season commenced. Their financial position is finally stable, and the ownership regime is one that supporters can rally to support. The club have been galvanised by the ongoing efforts of manager Mark Robins and the new owner Doug King, who rendered the club debt-free following his takeover in January.
