He may not be a PSL champion with Sundowns, but the Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng is the best player in South African football.
With 11 goals and 8 assists in 22 DStv Premiership appearances this season is an astonishingly good performance for any player, let along a guy playing in a wide attacking role.
Saleng is a key player in big games and was a key figure in Pirates run to MTN8 glory earlier this season, scoring a brace against Sundowns in the semi-final second leg and providing the assist for Kermit Erasmus opener.
Saleng has been nominated for the PSL Player of the Season award alongside Sundowns Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams. The Brazilians might have clinched the title, but the 35-year-old has added the most spark in the final third this season.
Saleng, who has been impressive for Bucs throughout the season, was hailed by Jose Riveiro, the Amazulu coach. Saleng scored one goal and made two assists as the Buccaneers hammered AmaZulu 4-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday. “Saleng was extra motivated obviously because his season has been excellent,” said Riveiro, who hardly praises his players to the media, after the match.
