The Presidency has confirmed that the interim report of the Madlanga Commission will not be released to the public, stating that the findings are still incomplete and not ready for public scrutiny.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to receive the interim report on Wednesday, 17 December. However, the document will remain confidential, with only the final report set to be made public in 2026.
According to the Presidency, the interim report does not contain final conclusions and reflects work that is still ongoing. Several witnesses who have already appeared before the commission are expected to return to either continue or expand on their testimony, while some evidence presented thus far has addressed only limited aspects of broader matters under investigation.
Interim Report Meant for Progress Update
Magwenya explained that the interim report is primarily intended to brief the President on the commission’s progress, as he has not been able to follow all the daily proceedings. The document will outline issues that have already been examined but will not present definitive findings or recommendations.
The Presidency has cautioned that releasing the report at this stage could lead to premature debate and misinterpretation, potentially undermining the integrity of the commission’s work.
Public Calls for Transparency
The decision comes amid growing public interest and debate around transparency, with questions being raised about why the interim findings will not be shared. In response, the Presidency has urged patience, emphasising the importance of allowing the commission to complete its mandate without external pressure.
Final Report Expected to Be Consequential
The Madlanga Commission was established to investigate serious governance and accountability concerns, and its final report is expected to carry significant implications for those implicated.
The Presidency has reiterated that transparency will be served once the commission concludes its work and submits a comprehensive final report, which will be made publicly available. Magwenya has further assured that the final findings will be consequential and address accountability in full.
