The African Transformation Movement has called on National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to act impartially after submitting a request to begin impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala scandal.
Parliament has confirmed receipt of the request and indicated that the Speaker is considering the matter in line with constitutional and parliamentary processes.
IPID Report Sparks Political Action
The move follows the release of a report by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, which examines the alleged cover up of a 2020 theft at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.
The incident involved the theft of approximately $580,000, which was reportedly concealed in furniture on the property.
The report recommends disciplinary action against senior members of the Presidential Protection Unit, including Wally Rhoode and Constable HH Rekhoto, for alleged misconduct such as using state resources for an unauthorised investigation and falsifying official records.
ATM Calls For Accountability
ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona welcomed Parliament’s acknowledgement and urged the Speaker to handle the matter without political bias.
He argued that the issue has persisted for too long and stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, particularly in a changing political landscape following the 2024 elections.
Growing Pressure From Civil Society
Various organisations and analysts have echoed calls for accountability, warning that consequences should not be limited to lower ranking officials.
Critics have questioned why the matter was not formally reported at the time and have raised concerns about transparency and leadership.
Ramaphosa Responds
Ramaphosa has denied any wrongdoing, stating that he had no involvement in the actions outlined in the IPID report.
He maintained that due processes are being followed and that the relevant institutions should be allowed to handle the matter independently.
