Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, accused mastermind behind a series of contract killings and controversial business dealings, is set to learn the outcome of his bail appeal this Friday, October 24.

Matlala’s legal team has been seeking his release from custody, arguing that he should be allowed to contest the charges against him while out on bail.

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg heard arguments from both the State and the defence on Monday, with the presiding judge reserving judgment to be delivered on Friday.

Matlala had initially applied for bail in September, but the Magistrate’s Court denied the request, citing concerns that he posed a flight risk and a potential danger to society.

The case has drawn attention due to Matlala’s alleged involvement in the failed assassination of his former partner, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023, as well as controversial business dealings linked to the Tembisa Hospital. Matlala has denied all charges.

During Monday’s hearing, the State highlighted concerns about Matlala’s access to a private jet, foreign assets in Mauritius, and possession of a fraudulent Eswatini identity document.

Prosecutors also raised issues regarding alleged attempts to bypass custody protocols, including the use of a cellphone while in detention at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility.

The defence argued that there is no direct evidence linking Matlala to the crimes. They contended that allegations of money laundering, firearms connections, and other charges were based on circumstantial evidence, including invoices and communications that do not directly implicate him. The defence also requested that, if granted bail, Matlala could be released on a R100,000 bond or placed under house arrest while cooperating with ongoing investigations.

The State, however, maintains that its case is supported by multiple strands of evidence, including money transfers, WhatsApp communications, and falsified invoices allegedly used to conceal payments to contract killers.

The court’s decision on Friday will determine whether Matlala will remain in custody or be granted bail while facing the serious charges against him.
