Eskom has confirmed that load reduction will continue across multiple areas in Gauteng this week as part of efforts to stabilise the power grid in high-density regions. Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for scheduled power outages during peak demand periods.
The measure is aimed at protecting infrastructure in areas prone to network overloading and high electricity consumption. Outages will follow a seven-day rotating schedule, giving communities a degree of predictability.
Load Reduction Schedule and Duration:
- Power cuts may last up to four to five hours, depending on the area.
- Morning reductions (05:00 – 09:00) will affect:
- Tsakane
- Rietvlei
- Moroka
- Kliepsruit
- Chiawelo
- Evening reductions (05:00 – 09:00) will affect:
- Garankuwa
- Mavimbela
- Zuma
- Nhlapo
- Sharpeville
- Stredford
- Doornkraal
- Sebokeng
- Evaton Central
- Surrounding extensions
- Other affected areas include Cosmo City, Protea North, Magagula Heights, as well as several informal settlements and suburbs.
Why Load Reduction Happens:
- Load reduction targets areas with illegal connections, network overloading, and infrastructure strain.
- Reducing electricity supply during peak hours helps prevent equipment failure, electrical fires, and widespread blackouts.
- Residents are urged to switch off non-essential appliances and report illegal connections.
How to Stay Informed:
- Check the Eskom website or local municipal platforms for area-specific schedules.
- Follow Eskom on social media for real-time updates.
- Prepare in advance by charging devices, keeping torches and batteries ready, and planning meals around outages.
- Report illegal connections or emergencies via Eskom’s Crime Line: 0800 112 722.
Eskom has called on communities to use electricity responsibly and cooperate with scheduled reductions to protect infrastructure and minimise downtime.
