PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA SEPTEMBER 22: National Commissioner of the South African Police Service General Fannie Masemola at the Madlanga Commission Of Inquiry on Day 4 at Brigitte Mabandla Judicial College on September 22, 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission to investigate and report on the veracity, scope, and extent of the allegations made on 6 July 2025 by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that South Africa's criminal justice system was compromised. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has maintained his innocence after appearing briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Masemola faces four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act in connection with the irregular awarding of the multi-million-rand Medicare24 tender.

The same tender is at the centre of a separate case involving alleged crime figure Vusimuzi Matlala and 12 police officers, who are also facing corruption-related charges.

Addressing the media after his court appearance, Masemola said he was confident of his innocence.

However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) maintains that there is a case against him, according to spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.

The matter has been postponed to May, when Masemola is expected to appear alongside Matlala as proceedings continue.
