Residents of Meadowlands and surrounding areas in Johannesburg will experience a 48-hour water disruption starting Sunday, 12 November, due to essential maintenance work.

Johannesburg Water confirmed that the outage will affect all streets in Meadowlands extensions 1 to 12, parts of Orlando West, Dube, Mofolo North and Central, as well as Tshepo Themba Hospital, Meadowlands Hostel, and Dube Hostel.

The disruption is necessary for upgrading the main Pressure-Reducing Valve (PRV) chamber, which supplies water to the Meadowlands reservoir and Tower, directly impacting the Meadowlands area.

The scheduled work will begin at 8:00 am on November 12 and end at 8:00 am on November 14.

This aims to improve the reliability and quality of water services in the affected regions.

To provide temporary relief, Johannesburg Water will deploy water tankers throughout the affected areas.

During a progress update on her department’s activities after 100 days in office, Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina discussed Gauteng’s water challenges.

She clarified that the water shortages were not due to drought but were caused by “self-inflicted” issues within local municipalities.

Majodina pointed out that concerns about deteriorating infrastructure had been ignored despite early warnings.

Majodina also addressed other factors affecting water supply, such as illegal connections, mining activities, and poor financial management by municipalities.

She urged local governments to prioritise infrastructure maintenance to avoid future water security problems.

Despite the planned outage, Johannesburg Water assured residents that the maintenance would ultimately enhance service delivery and ensure a consistent water supply.
