City of Cape Town Announces 16 Hour Planned Power Outage
The City of Cape Town has announced a planned 16 hour electricity outage later this month to allow for essential maintenance and upgrades to its power infrastructure.
The scheduled outage is expected to begin at 6pm on Saturday, 25 July, and continue until 10am on Sunday, 26 July, provided the maintenance work is completed on schedule. The City said an alternative date will be announced if the work cannot proceed as planned.
The planned interruption forms part of the municipality’s ongoing infrastructure maintenance programme aimed at improving the reliability and resilience of Cape Town’s electricity network.
The following areas are expected to be affected:
- Pinelands
- Howard Centre
- Epping
- Epping Industria
- Langa
The City said both the red and blue zones indicated on its official outage map, as well as Langa, will experience the planned interruption. Residents in neighbouring areas may also be affected.
Officials noted that electricity could be restored earlier than expected if maintenance work is completed ahead of schedule.
Residents are encouraged to switch off electrical appliances before the outage begins to minimise the risk of damage from possible power surges when electricity supply is restored.
The City apologised for the inconvenience and thanked residents for their patience, saying the planned maintenance is necessary to strengthen the electricity network and improve the long term reliability of power supply.
The municipality said scheduled outages form part of its preventative maintenance programme, which is intended to upgrade ageing infrastructure, enhance network performance and reduce the risk of unplanned electricity disruptions in the future.
