The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has called on government to urgently intervene amid rising fuel concerns, warning that uncertainty is already affecting daily taxi operations across the country.

The council says reports of fuel shortages, refuelling limits, and diesel supply issues are placing significant pressure on operators, threatening the reliability of public transport services.

SANTACO spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Phala said the organisation is working to prevent panic from spreading within the sector but acknowledged growing concern among taxi operators. She highlighted diesel pricing as a major issue, warning that some fuel stations may be taking advantage of weaker regulation compared to petrol.

Rising costs are adding strain on both operators and commuters, with the industry increasingly concerned about the sustainability of operations. SANTACO president Abner Tsebe said urgent steps are being taken to stabilise the situation and called for clear communication from government regarding fuel price expectations and possible relief measures.

FARE INCREASES MAY VARY BY ROUTE

SANTACO clarified that no national fare increase has been implemented. However, individual taxi associations may adjust fares based on their own financial pressures.

Some associations have already begun notifying commuters of potential fare increases, with any changes expected to be communicated at taxi ranks, inside vehicles, and through official channels.

The council emphasised that fuel is only one of several cost pressures affecting the industry. Other factors include vehicle maintenance, financing, licensing, and operational overheads, all of which influence fare decisions.

CALL FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

SANTACO said it plans to engage government on a range of proposals aimed at easing pressure on the sector. These include the introduction of commuter-focused subsidies, potential relief from fuel levies for public transport operators, and discussions with fuel suppliers to prioritise access for the taxi industry.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and industry stakeholders to maintain stable and accessible transport services as fuel-related challenges persist.
