Former Eskom chief executive Brian Molefe has resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. The party confirmed on Wednesday that Molefe will now dedicate his efforts to his role as Treasurer General, a position he assumed last month.
This marks the second time Molefe has left Parliament. In 2017, he briefly served as an ANC MP before stepping down amid controversy. His tenure with the MK Party was longer, lasting around one year and four months.
Molefe’s departure comes shortly after another high-profile resignation within the party. Lucky Montana, the former head of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), also vacated his parliamentary seat. Montana, like Molefe, has a history tied to state-owned enterprises and served during the presidency of Jacob Zuma, who now leads the MK Party.
Both men were named in the State Capture Report, though neither has faced convictions related to the allegations. Their exits highlight the shifting dynamics within the MK Party as it consolidates leadership roles and responsibilities.
