National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has confirmed that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will continue serving as KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial police commissioner for a second five-year term, citing his value to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The announcement was made at the provincial police headquarters, where all 11 district and acting district commissioners in KwaZulu-Natal were in attendance. Masemola emphasised that retaining Mkhwanazi was a strategic decision, highlighting his experience and contributions to policing in the province.

According to Masemola, the decision followed a thorough review of Mkhwanazi’s performance, with authorities concluding that his leadership remains critical. He noted that the State has made significant investments in Mkhwanazi’s training, positioning him among the most highly skilled senior officers within SAPS.

Mkhwanazi’s background includes specialised training, which Masemola said has strengthened his ability to operate at a high level and contribute meaningfully to policing efforts. This expertise, he added, makes him a key asset in addressing crime challenges.

The reappointment comes at a time when Mkhwanazi is under increased scrutiny following allegations of political interference within the police service. Despite the controversy, SAPS leadership has expressed confidence in his ability to continue leading crime-fighting efforts in the province.

Masemola maintained that Mkhwanazi’s continued tenure will play an important role in tackling serious and violent crime in KwaZulu-Natal, a province that has long faced complex policing challenges.
