Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia intended to rival Wikipedia, which the South African-born entrepreneur has often accused of ideological bias.
Grokipedia went live on Monday with its first version, named version 0.1, featuring more than 885 000 articles by the evening. In comparison, Wikipedia hosts over seven million English entries. Musk described Grokipedia as a platform dedicated to truth and transparency and indicated that version 1.0, still to come, will be far more advanced.
The launch, initially expected in late September, was delayed to refine content and remove what Musk referred to as propaganda. The articles on Grokipedia are created using artificial intelligence through xAI’s chatbot, Grok. One of the entries about Musk highlights his influence in debates surrounding technology, population growth, and institutional bias, while suggesting that traditional media often present him with political slant.
Musk’s criticism of Wikipedia is not new. He has repeatedly accused it of being driven by left-leaning contributors and claimed it cannot be considered a reliable source of factual information.
Wikipedia, established in 2001, is a non-profit online encyclopedia managed by volunteers and funded mainly through public donations. It operates under an open editing model that encourages global participation and claims to uphold a neutral point of view in its content.
