Criminally accused tender tycoon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has allegedly confessed to contributing R500,000 towards the presidential campaign of African National Congress (ANC) senior member Senzo Mchunu.
According to reports, Matlala told investigators after his arrest in May that he covered flight and accommodation costs for ANC delegates who travelled to Cape Town for the party’s January 8 celebrations.
The conversation, reportedly recorded by investigators, also captured Matlala claiming that Mchunu was eyeing the presidency and that he was assisting with campaign funding.
While Matlala claimed to have made the payments, he allegedly did so through an intermediary, ANC fixer Brown Mogotsi, rather than engaging with Mchunu directly.
Mchunu, who testified before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating police corruption and interference, denied ever speaking or communicating with Matlala.
It is understood that Matlala’s alleged contribution included purchasing flight tickets and paying for accommodation for party members attending the Cape Town event.
