E-hailing drivers operating in Gauteng have been encouraged to apply for permits to ensure compliance with the National Land Transport Act.
This was highlighted during a media briefing held by the Gauteng E-Hailing Services organisation alongside representatives from the South African meter taxi industry.
The briefing aimed to address ongoing regulatory and safety concerns affecting the sector.
Over recent weeks, several e-hailing drivers have staged protests to raise awareness about various challenges they face, including poor working conditions and significant reductions in fare prices.
Gauteng E-Hailing Services chairman Thato Ramaila emphasised the importance of formalising the industry.
He noted that without proper regulatory structures, e-hailing operators remain exposed to ongoing risks.
Among the most pressing issues are the impoundment of vehicles and the exploitation of drivers operating without the necessary permits.
Efforts to bring the industry into compliance are seen as a step towards improving accountability, protecting drivers, and fostering a safer and more sustainable transport environment for both service providers and passengers.
