Rolls-Royce has officially opened a new headquarters and training centre in Johannesburg, a major step in enhancing its operations across the African continent.
The facility will support the company’s Power Systems division and reflects a long-term commitment to the region, where sectors such as energy, mining and transportation continue to grow rapidly.
Covering approximately 6,000 square metres, the new centre has been designed to bring together key customer-facing functions in one location. These include service coordination, spare parts storage, logistics and technical training. The development represents a significant upgrade in support for the fleet of mtu mobile and stationary power solutions operating in various African countries.
Cobus Van Schalkwyk, Director of Global Mining and Managing Director at Rolls-Royce Solutions Africa, said the investment signals strong confidence in Africa’s potential.
“As we approach our 25th year in South Africa, this new facility is a clear sign of our belief in the continent’s growth and our desire to work more closely with our customers.”
In addition to improving support services, the Johannesburg facility will enable greater focus on local operations. This shift is expected to reduce lead times and improve supply chain reliability in regions where accessibility can often be a challenge.
The centre also features a new training academy that will accommodate between 100 and 150 trainees each year. It is equipped with a range of mtu 2000 and 4000 series training engines, as well as advanced tools and simulation equipment.
This will ensure that professionals in sectors such as mining and power generation receive both theoretical instruction and hands-on experience that meets the demands of modern industrial environments.
Another important element of the facility is its capacity to engineer and assemble repower modules. This allows outdated engines in mining haul trucks and excavators to be replaced with mtu systems that are customised to specific operational needs.
These upgrades are expected to enhance fuel efficiency, increase equipment uptime and reduce maintenance costs, ultimately lowering the total cost of ownership.
With the opening of this Johannesburg hub, Rolls-Royce Solutions Africa is demonstrating its dedication to providing robust solutions suited to Africa’s often harsh operating conditions.
The facility represents more than just a physical investment. It is a commitment to supporting African industries with the skills, systems and infrastructure required for long-term growth and resilience.
