Health authorities are closely monitoring reports of a rare respiratory illness that, in isolated cases, may spread between people and lead to severe complications.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla Motsoaledi said he is expecting a detailed briefing from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on the matter.
He indicated that the situation involves international coordination, including engagement with the World Health Organization, and that local authorities are awaiting updated information from health experts.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office has confirmed it is tracking developments and is in contact with the cruise company involved, as well as relevant local authorities.
Officials say further updates are expected once health authorities complete their assessments.
