New Waste Database: How Small Businesses Can Get Funding
PRETORIA — The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has launched a call for waste economy enterprises to register on a new national digital repository. The initiative aims to improve coordination and access to information for micro, small, and medium enterprises across the country.
Known as the Waste Economy Enterprises Repository of South Africa, the smart web and mobile based directory is designed to map and connect businesses within the sector. The department stated that the absence of a centralised database has previously limited the ability of policymakers to develop evidence based interventions and allocate resources efficiently.
To be eligible for registration on the platform, businesses must possess a valid Companies and Intellectual Property Commission number. The repository is intended to serve as a credible database that addresses longstanding gaps in reliable sector data, supporting both formal and informal business structures.
The department highlighted that the repository will provide small businesses with critical information regarding funding and empowerment opportunities. By acting as a link between key role players, the platform is expected to strengthen inclusive economic growth and improve resource allocation across the provinces.
This move marks a significant shift toward digital oversight in the environmental sector. Officials believe that having an up to date directory will allow for more targeted support for entrepreneurs who have previously struggled to access government assistance due to a lack of visibility.
The implementation of the repository follows growing concerns regarding the fragmentation of the waste management industry. By centralising data, the government intends to monitor sector trends more effectively and ensure that developmental resources reach the intended beneficiaries in the waste economy.
