The South African Police Service has confirmed that the same AK47 rifle used in the murder of musician DJ Sumbody has now been linked to three other killings, including that of Soweto-based DJ Hector Buthelezi, known as DJ Vintos.
Four men appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday. They include businessman Katiso Molefe, former police officer Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana.
The group already faces charges related to the November 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, along with his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Khumalo and Sandile Lemeza.
Authorities have now brought additional charges against three of the accused for the murder of Don Tindleni, who was shot and killed in a BMW on the N1 freeway in March 2023.
All four men are also charged in connection with the March 2022 killing of DJ Vintos, who was gunned down outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto.
According to police, a single AK47 has been forensically linked to all four murders. The suspects were reportedly travelling in a BMW X3 during one of the shootings. The case is being handled by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team in collaboration with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit.
Investigators believe the rifle used is tied to at least four murder scenes and could be connected to as many as ten high-profile cases, pending further ballistic analysis. Police say there is substantial additional evidence beyond the firearm linking the accused to the crimes.
Molefe is expected to return to court on 6 August for a formal bail application. The remaining three accused have chosen not to apply for bail.
