Operations at the Wynberg Magistrates Court were abruptly suspended on Thursday morning after authorities received a report of a possible explosive device inside the building.
The alert was raised when an unidentified individual reportedly phoned Telkom and claimed that an explosive device had been planted on one of the court’s floors. Police responded immediately, and early updates from Cape Town news outlets indicated that officers quickly secured the area and stopped all activity inside the courthouse.
Specialised SAPS units, including K9 explosive detection dogs and the Bomb Disposal Unit, were deployed to conduct a thorough search of the building. Police on the scene said teams were carrying out a careful, floor by floor sweep to assess and manage any potential threat.
The surrounding precinct has been cordoned off, with the public barred from approaching the court while the search is under way. Authorities have urged residents and commuters to avoid the area and to adhere to official instructions.
Community reports highlighted the caution with which officers were moving through the building as trained personnel examined each section. Police have not released any information about the caller’s identity, nor have they confirmed whether anything suspicious has been found.
Further updates are expected once the full sweep has been completed, as the situation remains ongoing.
